There are many risks with testosterone replacement therapy. We have talked about some of these risks in the past. Today, we are going to talk about recent evidence that suggests testosterone replacement therapy may have some long term benefits.
One recent study was conducted with approximately 1000 men, age 40-60. The study was conducted over an 11 year period. The summary of the study is that about 400 men received testosterone replacement therapy, 400 didn't and the rest either didn't qualify or did not want to take testosterone, due to the risks.
What They Found
The men in the TRT group got leaner while the men in the control group got fatter.
The blood pressure of the men in the TRT group decreased while the opposite was true for the men who didn't receive TRT.
Insulin sensitivity increased in the TRT men while it decreased in the control group.
LDL and HDL levels deteriorated in the TRT group to a greater degree than the non-TRT group.
Triglycerides dropped in the TRT group but increased in the control group.
According to the study long term use of TRT showed HDL and LDL levels worsened while triglyceride levels improved.
The researchers did not seem to think that there was a significant issue with this particular symptoms. They instead, decided to focus on the positive benefits that the TRT groups received and the cardio protective effects of TRT.
"We therefore suggest that adequate long-term testosterone therapy in hypogonadal men and obese men produces progressive and sustained, clinically meaningful weight loss and this therapy might reduce mortality and incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events."
According to this particular study the benefits definitely out weight the risks. The encouraging take-away from these findings is that there is little to no chance of prostate
cancer occurring as a result of long-term testosterone therapy if treatment is managed properly.
Have a wonderful week
